#15 – Love Your Community

The other night I was out with a dear friend for the 100th anniversary of the Martha Graham Dance Company performance, where I crossed paths with a few other folks I’ve known, as one does after living in the same city for over thirty years, including my old friend Richard Parsakian, proprietor of the infamous EONS vintage clothing boutique.

It may have been shortly before seeing him or afterward, but I found myself thinking about everything I was wearing that day and was moved to realize that the majority of what I was adorned with were primarily gifts; from the jacket I was wearing to the earrings, the most supple, gorgeous green leather warmly lined gloves (from EONS!) and cashmere socks that kept my feet toasty along with boots that I had made (who a friend inspired and helped me measure more parts of my foot than I thought possible) – definitely costly, but I’m pretty sure unless something happens to change the shape of my feet I’ll have my Beck’s until I die! The fun Italian jumper made of some wonderfully warm material that made up the majority of my outfit was from a thrift store in Phillie.

The more I contemplated each item that figured somewhere on my body (my engagement ring that was made by a craftsman in Ireland, the scarf I knitted, the necklace that was also a gift) the more I felt my heart swelling with love and gratitude for all the people in my local and extended community who had made it possible for me to be dressed that day!

One of the affirmations I recite each morning is of thanks to all the people in my life (that I know AND don’t know, for there are I think more of the latter) who make my life easier/more comfortable/beautiful, for we truly are a whole world community. This will be your process for today: spend some time reflecting on perhaps what you’re wearing or the room you’re in and consider where everything came from and offer up a prayer of thanks – for none of us is doing this thing called life alone ❤️
