I’m writing this on Valentine’s Day Eve (yep, it’s a thing cuz I want it to be!) and over the last week I’ve been finding the hibernating ladybugs of my area throughout my bedroom (in small quantities). While I have glimpsed one or two in past winters, I never gave them a whole lot of attention because I didn’t know that they, like many insects, hibernated. I thought they had actually just chosen the little nooks and crannies between the carpet and the wall as their final resting place.
Once again though, the natural world has surprised me.
The ladybug pictured is one that I spotted near the animal wise tarot deck that I keep under a lamp next to my bed (yes, ladybug is in the deck) so I carefully slid one of the tarot cards under it and let it slide off on to my hand to examine it more closely – it’s not often that one gets to have a more intimate look at these beings and I didn’t think it was alive either so imagine my delight as I felt it’s tiny legs moving ever so slightly against the palm of my hand – squee!
And I fell in love with the earth again, and all the living things in it.
