A few weeks ago, I took part in a half marathon (I have *never* had a desire to be involved with any such thing) to support a friend that had registered in the walking division. Walk a half marathon? Now THIS I could (and even felt like it would be something possibly fun to) do!
In the time leading up to the event, some other friends of this friend and I had been communicating via a group text about training and generally were acting as supportive teammates for the upcoming endeavor.
By the night before the event, some final plans were being laid for where we would meet and at what time etc. and I was traveling back early from an event that I had been attending a that was a few hours out of town (remember to check your calendar when signing up for things peeps!) so I could get a good nights sleep before the big day.
Well, it was a day alright! As you can see in the picture above, a community of walkers (and runners, though not visible) had turned out to the tune of around 20k strong and it wasn’t long before we were all off and having an event.
While a number of things occurred that were unexpected (and I ended up running about half of the half!) the lessons I learned surrounding this experience in communication as well as in community were numerous and honestly, were the best part of the event itself!
What events are taking place where you are right now that you can commune in? Is it time to take a look around for something to go insert yourself into so you can learn from your fellow communitarians (or just have yourself a good ‘ole time?)
Spring may be the best season for stoking the communal fires as extra daylight allows for more time outside doing and being part of your greater Earth community.
Off you go!
